moths, crabs, fluids

Starting Saturday, 22 October, visitors to the newly opened and refurbished Koszyki Hall will be able to see moths, crabs, fluids, an exhibition put up to celebrate the reopening of the Hall by the WRO Art Center at the invitation of the Griffin Art Space. Two kinetic installations, both main Award-winners of the WRO Media Art Biennale, are placed in the open space, directly above the visitors’ heads, while seven other works are distributed across well-visible spots of the Hall’s glass-walled first floor.

The exhibition is curated by Piotr Krajewski, Artistic Director of the WRO International Media Art Biennale. Its role isn’t just to celebrate the opening of the Koszyki Hall, but also to herald other art shows we plan to hold in this space.” says Anna Klimczak, President of the Griffin Art Space Foundation.

moths, crabs, fluids brings together artists who work with moving images, mobile forms, active systems and living organisms. The displayed works by artists from Poland, Japan, Australia and Germany, affiliated with the WRO Art Center, explore a dense network of current organic interrelations between nature and technology, new materials, fields and energies, and surprising interpenetrations and interdependences of nature and culture.

Curator Piotr Krajewski comments on the exhibits: In the artists’ visions, bagworms weave their necessary, albeit flamboyant, protective cases from the same fabrics that top-notch fashion designers use. Hermit crabs select cities to carry on their backs while the energy of Pacific waves is intercepted and transmitted on-the-fly by a kinetic installation suspended over the visitors’ heads…

The WRO Art Center and the Griffin Art Space started working together in 2013. Since then, among other joint projects, they have produced the acclaimed shows of Distinguishing Features – Artists Born in Poland Around 1989 and Istvan Kantor’s Media Revolt as well as international exhibitions at the WRO Media Biennale.

moths, crabs, fluids is the first collaborative project of the WRO Art Center and the Griffin Art Space to be shown in Warsaw.
